Contemporary French Provincial Style Home Defines Green Greatness

Feel your stress melt away in this peaceful Balhannah oasis. Even better, it was designed not to freeze in winter.

It is hard to imagine that 28 years ago there was only one tree on the 1.01ha block of this magnificent property in Balhannah.

Well, there were, says seller John, who along with his partner Sally is enjoying the stunning home he built a few years later.

“Everything here was created from scratch, including this garden – everything you see I put there,” he says. “The guy who built it was absolutely brilliant, and the house turned out to be stunning. I really wanted a contemporary French Provincial style house and didn’t want it to be open plan. I lived in the hills for 15 years before building this place and you freeze your back in an open space because it’s so hard or expensive to keep warm in the winter I decided I wanted rooms so I could close them up and keep them warm when we were there so I put in floor heating and the house is extremely well insulated, that was so important.

Its location was also important to John, who, having enjoyed life in the Adelaide Hills for over a decade, knew exactly how he wanted to spend the next stage of his life.

“I’ve lived in Aldgate and Stirling and it’s a lot more overcast than it is on this side of the hills in the valley,” says John.

“Here when it’s cold you can still see the sun in winter, whereas on this side of the hills it’s misty and foggy and for me it’s depressing. Also, the street here is lined with gummies, and it was a huge attraction when I was watching.

The house has three bedrooms, formal and informal living areas and is surrounded by landscaped gardens. It’s a combination that makes entertainment a breeze, says John.

“My two daughters got married in the garden here and we also had many birthday parties,” he says. “We have an annual Christmas Eve celebration here and we’ve had that for the past 15 years and it’s usually around 20 people. My grandkids are very sad that I’m selling the place as we had such a great time and it’s a fantastic place to get together with the family. It was an absolute joy living here, but I’m getting too old to be here now and need to be closer to town.

John says the property would be ideal for a family and its proximity to the attractions of Balhannah, Woodside and Hahndorf makes living there an absolute dream.
